What is a doula?
Any mother will tell you that the day you deliver your child is far more than a series of physical events. The day your child is born is also the day parents are born. It is a transformational experience - a unique life event fraught with emotion and profound meaning. The word "doula" comes from the Greek and means "woman caregiver." A doula is someone fortunate enough to accompany a woman through that miraculous transformation. The doula will "mother the mother"; the doula takes care of her emotional needs through childbirth and the immediate postpartum period. In addition to that, a doula provides support and suggestions for dads, partners, and other family and friends that may be present for the birth that will enhance their experiences.
As a certified DONA doula, I am educated and knowledgeable about childbirth and the postpartum experience. I will be your advocate, a listening ear for birthing mothers, and a facilitator to her partner(s). I am educated to work within evidence-based standards of practice. The skills I've been taught and have become very comfortable utilizing are medically proven to make a true difference in the experience of birth.
